Muriwai Tournament
‘Mai ngā Kuri ā whārei ki Tihirau’
Nau mai haere mai, welcome…
To the official website page of the Muriwai Tournament Opotiki. The Muriwai tournament has been operating now approximately 40 years. A special mention to the founder, Puhuka (Bubu) Biddle Huriwaka who started the tournament all those years ago. A humble wahine toa and yet a visionary ahead of her time, her main aspiration was to have whanau, hapu, iwi connect, re-connect via a sporting platform. Slowly but surely the Muriwai tournament evolved and continues to evolve welcoming all hapu and iwi living along the coastline as well as inland.
The tournament is named after Muriwai our Tipuna, a chieftain in her own right, a voyager from Hawaiki.
